Sunbed licence

The Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010 (Wales) Regulations 2011, places certain requirements on sunbed operators including:

• the prohibition on use by under 18’s
• a ban on unmanned salons
• adequate supervision and the availability of statutory notices and information leaflets

European legislation dictates a ‘safe’ level of UV radiation that is emitted from the tubes of the sunbed (0.3 W/m²).  If the levels exceed this then the equipment is potentially ‘unsafe’ and contravenes the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

We regularly inspect premises to ensure compliance with the law and to protect consumers from potentially harmful exposure to high levels of radiation. Businesses will be contacted before a visit is undertaken and given a certificate if their bed complies. Those that do not will be required to take steps to ensure that the beds do fall within the allowable limit.
