Local Elections 2017

On 4th May 2017 elections will be held for Carmarthenshire County Council and your local Town and Community Council. 

74 County Councillors are to be elected. These representatives shape and decide on County Council services which will affect everyone living in Carmarthenshire.

Locally, their work includes:

  • holding surgeries to help local people
  • supporting local organisations
  • campaigning on local issues
  • developing links with all parts of the community and being a community leader. 

In Carmarthenshire we have 72 Town and Community Councils represented by 791 Town and Community Councillors. They are also elected on a five year term. 

To stand for election to a Town or Community Council, there are a number of criteria that you must meet. Full details can be found on the Electoral Commission website.

The Electoral Commission is offering training sessions for people wishing to stand as independent candidates in this year’s local government elections in Wales.

There are four training sessions taking place on: 

  • Wednesday 8 March in the Civic Centre, Merthyr Tydfil
  • Wednesday 15 March at University of Swansea, Bay Campus
  • Monday 20 March at University of Wales, Trinity St. David's, Carmarthen
  • Thursday 23 March in the Council Chamber, Guildhall, Wrexham
