Apply for a school place: 3 year olds

At the age of 3, your child is eligible to attend nursery for 10 hours. They will attend school either in the morning or in the afternoon.

Once your child is four years old they will attend Primary school all day. Only 40 of our Primary Schools can provide a nursery place from the age of 3 years old. You can also send your child to a registered Cylch Meithrin, they receive funding from Welsh Government on your child’s behalf. You will need to speak to them about their application process and timetable as it is independent to ours.

You do not have to send your children to school until they are 5 years old but many parents find this early start beneficial.

Before making an application we recommend that you visit the schools you are interested in your child attending. They will have the opportunity to learn through either Welsh or English depending on the school they attend. Each school has its own language category, please refer to the Information for Parents handbook for additional guidance (page 36 - 37).

Please contact the school directly to make your application if you are considering sending your child to one of the following schools:

  • Model Church of Wales Primary School in Carmarthen
  •  St.Mary’s Catholic Primary school in Llanelli

  • If your application was on time you will be notified in October the year before e.g Term starts in 2018 you will be notified in October 2017.
  • If your application was late it reduces your chances of getting a place and we can’t guarantee your child will start at the beginning of term. We will notify you as soon as possible but the application process takes up to eight weeks.
  • If you are offered a place you must confirm that you accept the place you’ve been offered within 14 days. If you don’t your place may be taken away.
  • Once you’ve accepted your child’s place you must contact the school to agree a start date.

If your child is refused a nursery place to all of your chosen schools, there is no right to appeal but your name will be kept on a waiting list until 30th September and if a place becomes available we’ll let you know. You can make a late application for other schools.

Important

Whilst completing the application form you will be asked if you would like to apply for your child’s Primary school place from the age of 4. If you tick this box you will not need to make another application for admission into the same school. However it is important to note, just because your child is accepted at the age of three there is no guarantee that they will be offered a school place from 4 years old. It just means you won't need to apply twice if you tick the box.

If you would like to send them to a different Primary school from the age of four you will need to re-apply for their place.

If you have any additional queries please e-mail us on admissions@carmarthenshire.gov.uk.
