Help with meals

Help with meals

Sometimes people are not able to cook for themselves, because of illness or frailty, and this can make it difficult for them to continue living independently in their own homes.

Eating a nutritious and balanced diet is important and there are many options available to make sure that you eat proper meals regularly.

Frozen meal delivery

It is possible to buy a week (or a fortnight)'s supply of nutritionally balanced frozen meals, delivered to your home, which you can then reheat in a microwave or conventional oven.

You choose the meals you would like from a brochure or from the delivery company's website.
Two companies which operate in the local area are:

Wiltshire Farm Foods - Tel: 0800 773 773
Oakhouse Foods - Tel: 0845 643 2009

Online shopping - Supermarkets

If you, a relative or a friend have access to the internet you can order your groceries on-line and have them delivered to your door. Once you have set up your first shop it is very easy to re-order and plan your deliveries. Supermarkets charge anything between £2 - £6 for delivering groceries, and are sometimes free for large orders.

Your local convenience store might also be able to help with shopping – it’s always worth checking.

Lunch Clubs

There are a number of lunch clubs for older people in Carmarthenshire, usually meeting once a week. These take place in community centres and halls, and usually offer some social activities as well as a meal.

Local Cafés & Pubs

If there is a café or pub close to your home, they may be happy to deliver a regular hot meal to you at lunchtime. Why not ask?

Community meals service

If you are unable to prepare a meal for yourself safely you may be eligible for the Community Meals Service, which is better known as ‘meals on wheels’. This service delivers a nutritionally-balanced, hot 2 course meal to your home - a main meal and dessert. We can also arrange for you to have frozen meals delivered. This will give you the flexibility of being able to have the meal when you want it. To receive community meals you will need to contact Careline+ on 0300 333 2222 and we will carry out an assessment of your needs to see if you qualify for meals from us and how many you will need.

If you are eligible to receive the Community Meals Service there is a fixed cost of £4.00 per meal.
