Why are we consulting

This map is for everyone who wants to make journeys on foot or by bike across our region, for any purpose, including those who don’t walk or cycle often and people who use mobility aids. We would like your comments on the infrastructure we already have and what you would like to see in the future. Comments will then be used, alongside those we have already gathered, to help plan Carmarthenshire’s Active Travel Network Map.

Following the passing of the Active Travel (Wales) Act in 2013 all Local Authorities in Wales are required to produce maps of Active Travel networks. These maps will help to identify opportunities to expand and improve the network and facilities, whilst also highlighting what has been done well. Routes are to be coherent, direct, safe, comfortable and attractive.

Built up areas with populations exceeding 2000 people and predominantly residential land use have been identified in the Act and are shown on our online map. While Active Travel Funding has historically been limited to these areas, we are seeking countywide feedback to create a cohesive network across Carmarthenshire and linking with neighbouring authorities.

Local Sustainable Transport Measures in Response to Covid19

In addition to general comments on our Active Travel Network we are also seeking input into sustainable transport measures in response to Covid-19. We welcome suggestions that will enable safe social distancing and ideas to support the positive shift to more sustainable travel habits that we have seen during lockdown. If you have any ideas that relate to this please select the Covid-19 option on question 4 when adding your comment.

How to get involved

The consultation will mainly be focused on the online interactive mapping tool. We recommend you launch the mapping tool in Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Microsoft Edge. The mapping tool isn’t supported by Internet Explorer.

Alternatively, if you wish to submit your comments via e-mail, or should you require any assistance on the use of the map, please contact

Next Steps

Currently the deadline for the resubmission of the Active Travel Network Maps is September 2021, however this is subject to change. While the consultation will inform these new maps it will also be utilised in the ongoing processes of designing and construction Active Travel routes.
