The Chair of Carmarthenshire County Council for 2018/2019 is Councillor Mansel Charles.
He was elected to the office of Chair at the Annual meeting of the Council held on 16th May 2018, and will serve until the next Annual Meeting which will be held in May 2019.
Councillor Mansel Charles has represented the Llanegwad Electoral Ward, which includes the parishes of Llanfynydd, Llanfihangel Rhos y Corn and Llanegwad, since 2011.
Mansel was born in the Dryslwyn area. Following his education at Cwrt Henri Primary School and Llandeilo Grammar School, he received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Trinity College, Carmarthen.
He has worked as a teacher, a regional officer for the Farmers' Union of Wales and currently farms near Felingwm Isaf.
Mansel is a man of his Community and Carmarthenshire and his contribution to social, cultural and charitable organisations within the County is extensive.
He has been a community councillor for over forty years and has been chair on several occasions. Mansel has supported the Young Farmers Organisation since he was a young boy, and has been chair and county president of the organisation.
He is also a former chairman and president of the agricultural charity RABI in Carmarthenshire and a sponsor of the charity Eiriol. He was also a founding member of Menter Bro Dinefwr and the first chairman of the Menter, and his term in charge was key in providing a firm foundation.
He is a former warden of his local church in Cwrt Henri and is the founder of the Plygain service in Nantgaredig. He serves and holds posts on a number of other committees within the area.
His greatest contribution is possibly his voluntary work for the Welsh community paper, Y Lloffwr. He has been senior editor for over twenty years, and is responsible for the paper on a daily basis.
At the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Eryri a’r Cyffiniau 2005, he was made a member of Gorsedd y Beirdd for his service to the community life of Towy Valley.
During his time on the County Council, he has served on a number of committees. He is currently a member of the Planning and Licensing committees and is a member of the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service Authority.
The Chair is the first citizen of Carmarthenshire County Council, and is elected at the Annual Meeting. The duties include chairing full meetings of the Council and representing the Council at formal and ceremonial occasions in the County and beyond. He / she also welcomes visitors to the County and attends and supports events organised by local people and organisations.
During his / her year of office the Chair of the County Council usually raises funds for local charities. Councillor Charles will continue this excellent tradition and will support the Wales Air Ambulance and Wales Alzheimers Society charities.
The Vice-Chairman for 2018/2019 is Councillor Kevin Madge.
