Kickstart Scheme
Kickstart your career
What is the Kickstart scheme?
The Kickstart scheme, is part of the UK Government’s plan to create thousands of jobs across the UK for those aged 16-24 years old who are claiming Universal Credit and are at risk of long term unemployment.
As part of this scheme, we are working with local businesses who are looking to offer opportunities to those looking to up-skill and gain confidence in a new work environment.
You will be paid the National Minimum Wage (or the National Living Wage depending on your age) for 25 hours per week for a total of 6 months.
These roles will allow you to develop new skills, be mentored by experienced staff and given the opportunity to work in new areas that you may not have thought of trying before.
As part of this scheme we are looking to offer over 60 opportunities throughout the county in addition to working with local business throughout Carmarthenshire who are looking to support you in key areas. Opportunities include:
- Barista
- Beekeepers
- Business Administration
- Bus Drivers
- Domiciliary Care Worker
- Funeral Directors
- Marketing and Media
- Lifeguard
- Park Warden
- Project Management
If you're interested in applying, please get in touch with your work coach. You can contact your work coach through your online Universal Credit account.
What if I'm not eligible to join this scheme?

Support for businesses
Can you offer a young person a job placement that will give them the experience they need? If you think you can help young people who are currently at risk of long-term unemployment, we can help! We are registered as a Kickstart gateway which means we can help with the following. We will:
- Act as an intermediary and apply for funding on your behalf.
- Provide employability support to the young people in the job on your behalf.
- Gather information about the jobs you’d like to offer
- Share this information with DWP on your behalf
- Pay the funding to you (for example the young person’s salary)
If you would like to create a Kickstart placement for your business, please e-mail kickstart@carmarthenshire.gov.uk.
Further information can be found on the Kickstart Scheme website.
