Active Travel Schemes

The below active travel schemes have been designed to help connect local residents with key trip attractors. The importance of providing high quality infrastructure in the correct location is at the forefront of our aspirations to encourage higher levels of active travel for day-to-day journeys along with all of the associated benefits.

We are constantly seeking ways in which we can improve our active travel network and your feedback, either directly to us or via the Active Travel consultation page will help us to develop and deliver new active travel routes. The Active Travel Network Map will help to shape the future of our walking and cycling infrastructure across the County.

The projects listed below for have been developed following direct feedback from the residents of Carmarthenshire along with input from key stakeholders. They help to maintain our status as the Cycling Hub and Wales and fulfil our duties as part of the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013. All schemes have been funded by the Welsh Government via the Active Travel fund.

Black Bridge

Construction of a new ramped access and shared use bridge over the railway line to replace the existing stepped structure. This will link previously completed routes to Trostre/Halfway with access to Pentre Awel and the MCP.

Safe Routes in Drefach

Improved and safer access throughout the village specially to the school site itself and to the Gwendraeth Valley sports centre. Other improvements include widening footways where possible and enhancing crossing points.

Safe Routes in Trimsaran

Several enhancements to make it easier to walk/scoot/cycle to key destinations within Trimsaran. These include a signalised crossing over the B4308 leading to the school and a re-design of the roundabout with improved links to the leisure centre and rugby club.

Marine Street

A safe and direct link West from the Railway station is being developed that will lead directly to North Dock and the MCP via Marine Street.

Felinfoel Brewery

Tied to the recently completed works along Llethri Road this scheme aims to continue active travel access South along Millfield Road, linking to safe access to Salem Road. This is a key quiet route leading directly to Llanelli town centre.

A484 to Box Roundabout

Creation of a new direct cycle route that ties Llanelli town centre with Trostre & Pemberton retail parks and the proposed spinal route. This will include the link from the new A484 bridge to Aldi.

Halfway Lights

Ongoing monitoring leading to a redesign of the signals and junction at Halfway. One of the main objectives is to create a direct and safe crossing point over Glyncoed Terrace as part of the proposed spinal route.

Black Lion Road

We are reviewing the entire length of Black Lion Road to develop a series of interventions that support safer movement for Active Travel users as a key link connecting the communities of Gorslas and Capel Hendre.

Tumble, Llanelli

Progress has been made on the masterplan with ongoing development of several routes and interventions across Tumble to improve the Active Travel network, with WelTAG Stage 2 now completed.

Carmarthen

We are continuing to develop our new approach with Active Travel in Carmarthen, developing key walking and cycling routes for better connectivity. Further engagement and consultation will continue in 2024 to help develop these schemes.

St Clears

We are developing a masterplan containing a series of routes that will better connect St Clears and the surrounding settlements via active travel methods.

Caerbryn to Penygroes, Ammanford

A continuation of the current 3m shared use path. The scheme seeks continue the shared use path between Caerbryn to Penygroes to provide better connectivity for active travel, with the aim to link into the key strategic employment area of Cross Hands.

Shands Road, Ammanford

The scheme seeks to create a route that connects from a previous phase of works into Ammanford, providing an off-road link from Blaenau towards Ammanford Town Centre.

Llandovery

We are continuing to develop a series of routes and interventions that will improve connections within Llandovery via active travel methods.

Pembrey & Burry Port

We are working on feasibility studies to better understand movements around Pembrey and Burry Port and identify opportunities for improving active travel infrastructure.

Completed Active Travel Schemes

These were constructed to enhance or create new infrastructure to make it easier for the residents & visitors of Carmarthenshire to actively travel around their local environment
