In line with the Council’s aspirations, Zone 1 of Pentre Awel has been designed and constructed with consideration for sustainability and its potential impact on the environment.

Zone 1 will maximise efficiency and reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption through:

  • Fabric first approach,
  • Promoting natural daylight and ventilation,
  • Use of air source heat pumps,
  • Over 850 solar panels installed on the roof of Zone 1 building,
  • Biodiverse brown/green roof,
  • BREAAM Excellent accreditation,
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure,
  • Active travel and public transport with a view to reducing vehicular trips to site,
  • Zone 1 will extend a west to east Public Right of Way (PRoW) connecting Morfa to the Millennium Coastal Park,
  • Sustainable methods of construction by Zone 1 contractor Bouygues UK, including the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) for plant/machinery, solar panel powered site offices and cabins and recycling of excavated material/soil to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Bouygues has committed to diverting 98% of waste from landfill.
