In May 2023, Carmarthenshire County Council launched its innovative 21st Century Skills project. Funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal Skills and Talent programme, this is a Real World Learning (RWL) project delivered in partnership with Bouygues that aims to provide experiential learning within construction. Pupils from Ysgol Pen Rhos, Ysgol Y Strade, St John Lloyd; Coedcae and Bryngwyn are taking part in an 8 week challenge in which they will be tasked with designing a space at Pentre Awel. Participants will be mentored by Bouygues professionals and benefit from site visits and reference visits to similar projects.

Led by Cardiff University, a Pharmabees project has been delivered in Ysgol Pen Rhos which has seen the installation of bee hives onsite and staff training as beekeepers. The project stimulates interest in science, raises awareness of sustainability and promotes wellbeing.

Additionally, a Making Space for Nature project was undertaken at Ysgol Pen Rhos. Children, parents and teachers were asked for their views on green spaces within their local area. The findings from the project are informing the ongoing scoping of outdoor activities and initiatives at Pentre Awel.
