The Grade II listed “Yr Hen Farchnad”/ “The Old Market” in Llandeilo, has been brought back into use to provide new employment and event space in the heart of the town. The facility includes an exciting new events venue/market hall and a destination restaurant/cafeteria.
Constructed in the 1830s, the market was a key part of Llandeilo’s history up until 2002 when it became disused. The market fell into a state of disrepair and placed on the ‘buildings at risk register’ having been classified as vulnerable in 2007.
The total renovation scheme costs were funded by £1.7m of the Welsh Government’s ‘Transforming Towns’ programme and the European Regional Development Fund, which refocused the Welsh Government’s efforts on revitalising town centres, transforming them to be fit for the 21st Century. The balance of the funding was provided by Carmarthenshire County Council.
