Welsh Language
Carmarthenshire has the largest number of Welsh speakers in Wales. Our bilingual population is a unique and valuable asset.
We have a statutory obligation to provide Welsh medium services but we are also passionate about promoting the Welsh language and ensuring that all our residents have the opportunity to learn and use the Welsh language in every aspect of life. Despite the loss of Welsh speakers according to the 2021 Census, we are doing our very best to contribute in a meaningful way to the Welsh Government’s aim to increasing the number of Welsh speakers in Wales to a million by 2050.
We are determined to ensure that Welsh remains a living language in the communities of Carmarthenshire. In order to do this, we need to work together to create more opportunities for children, young people, adults and families to learn and use the Welsh language in school, in work, in business and in leisure activities. We need to ensure that we are not only able to speak Welsh but that we are using the Welsh language confidently in all aspects of life.
