Welsh Language
Carmarthenshire is one of the strongholds of the Welsh language in Wales, with 72,838 people able to speak Welsh according to Census 2021. Our bilingual population is a unique and valuable asset that contributes to the culture, communities and economy of the county.
We have a statutory duty to provide Welsh-language services, but we are also committed to promoting the Welsh language and ensuring that residents of the county have opportunities to learn, use and enjoy the language in every aspect of life. Despite the decrease in the number of Welsh speakers recorded in Census 2021, we continue to contribute to the Welsh Government’s ambition of reaching one million Welsh speakers by 2050.
We are determined to ensure that the Welsh language remains a living and thriving language in Carmarthenshire’s communities. To achieve this, we need to work together to create more opportunities for children, young people, adults and families to use Welsh in school, in the workplace, in businesses and in leisure activities.
