Laugharne

Laugharne is a small town with a big reputation, known for its castle, historical architecture, and the international profile of poet Dylan Thomas. The town boasts a picturesque coastline and attractive foreshore.

The township historically grew around the area of the original harbour and River Coran and is densely developed. Today, it has become a popular location for both permanent residents and those seeking second or holiday homes. The A4066 road, connecting St Clears and the coastal resort of Pendine, runs through the town, providing relatively easy access to the A40. However, the historic streets are not well-suited for heavy traffic.

The local economy is largely driven by tourism, accommodation, and hospitality businesses. Residents also benefit from employment opportunities in nearby areas, including light industrial and commercial sectors around St Clears, and a broader range of jobs, including public sector roles, in Carmarthen.

Beyond the town, the economy supports various rural enterprises such as agriculture, land-based industries, food and drink production, and tourism. Additionally, there are numerous micro-businesses, including newer 'lifestyle', visitor-related, and creative industries that blend living and working in rural settings.

Ten Towns Project

A new family friendly restaurant in Laugharne received support from the Ten Towns Capital Development fund. Located at the old Portreeve restaurant, the funding supported the redevelopment of the vacant premises, which has been transformed into a popular food and drink venue in the town, creating more than 8 full time posts.

Ten Towns Revenue Project

Laugharne Memorial Hall, located in the heart of the township, provides a variety of services for the local community. To ensure its sustainability and explore future economic opportunities, funding has been allocated to conduct market research and assess the feasibility of developing a produce and craft market at the hall, creating new opportunities for local businesses.

The Memorial Hall has also benefited from a painted mural by Carmarthenshire artist Steve Jenkins, adding vibrancy and colour to the town. Jenks Art took inspiration from the town’s rich history to create an eye-catching art piece, acting as a welcoming gateway into Laugharne.

Revitalising Rural Town Centres

Local business owners highlighted the need for assistance in enhancing the exterior appearance of their properties. In response, a dedicated grant fund was established to support this initiative. Two high street businesses in Laugharne were approved for funding to improve the exterior of their buildings, contributing to the town’s overall vibrancy and visual appeal.

Tackling Towns

Small scale enhancement works have been carried out in the town to upkeep the area’s charm and overall appearance.
