Newcastle Emlyn

Newcastle Emlyn, nestled in the picturesque Teifi Valley between Cardigan and Lampeter, is a traditional market town which serves a wide and largely rural community astride the River Teifi in both Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion.

The town supports several large regional employers including Dairy Partners together with a number of well occupied industrial areas hosting a range of enterprises including biotech and IT businesses.

The town also directly supports the rural economy through the livestock market and associated feed merchants, machinery and engineering uses. Other notable industries include construction and numerous local services and trades that contribute to the foundational economy. The rural hinterland supports a wider range of agricultural and land-based industries including food producers and tourism businesses. The distinctive and historic town centre has a good mix of retail and services with a particular focus on convenience, food and drink and speciality retail.

Outside of the centre, the leisure centre and secondary school reflect the town's role as a key settlement in the north of the county. Overall, Newcastle Emlyn serves as a vital hub for employment, community activities, education, sports, and retail for the wider region, including areas like Llangeler and Llandyfriog.

Ten Towns Project

Newcastle Emlyn Town Council successfully secured funding to support two significant projects:

Hengwrt

The vacant Grade II listed former Courthouse building in Newcastle Emlyn is currently in the ownership of Carmarthenshire County Council and until 2019 was used as the town’s library. The Town Council was offered the opportunity to manage the building for the town's benefit on a 21-year lease. With approved funding, the necessary refurbishment was undertaken to restore the building to its original condition, transforming it into a vibrant community hub.

Amphitheatre

The growth team identified the need for a feature attraction in the town centre and proposed an Amphitheatre near the castle. The proposed project will be an outdoor venue for various activities, including sporting events, cultural performances, plays, pantomimes, choral events, and orations. This project is still in the development phase.

Ten Towns Revenue Project

Landsker Consultants supported the town council's business plan for developing Hengwrt as a service centre. Community engagement sessions shaped the plan by incorporating residents' input on using the former courthouse.

Financial support was secured to host the British Cycling’s Junior National Time Trial and National Road Race Championships in Newcastle Emlyn in June 2024. This national event increased town footfall and supported local businesses. Additionally, funding was obtained to purchase event equipment, ensuring the sustainability and development of future events in the town.

Capital Development Fund

Through funding received from the Capital Development Fund, a derelict property comprising two vacant premises was successfully renovated and brought back into use. The project has resulted in the establishment of two new commercial spaces - Emlyn Kitchens and Emlyn Interiors.

Ten Towns Circular Economy Fund

Cadernid Emlyn, an established local group, developed a circular economy hub from a vacant town centre premise. Their existing projects are now based at the hub, which also supports the development of a new "library of things" for the community.

Revitalising Rural Town Centres

Discussions with high street business owners across all of the Ten towns led to the development of the Revitalising Rural Town centre fund to support high street business premises to refresh, enhance and add vibrancy to their shop frontages.

A dedicated grant fund was created to support this activity with several high street premises in Newcastle Emlyn having been approved funding to enhance the exterior of their building to support the appearance and vibrancy of the town.

Additionally, Carmarthenshire based street artist Steve Jenkins has painted a mural in the town that captures its history and heritage, including the livestock market and the castle.

Ten Towns Events Fund

Newcastle Emlyn District Collective received support from this fund for a Music in the Park event held over the Summer. The event was well attended and had a variety of local artists, stalls and activities to suit a wide audience.

Tackling Towns

Sycamore street is the heart of Newcastle Emlyn town centre and is home to both a large number of independent shops and national chains. The local community were keen to prioritise the resurfacing of the pavement area in the town to provide a more cohesive aesthetic to the town in keeping with its heritage.
