Zoo licence
Page updated on: 27/06/2025
If you wish to operate a zoo then you will need to apply for a licence.
A zoo is an establishment where wild animals are kept for exhibition to the public, other than in a circus or as part of a pet shop. The licence applies to any zoo where the public are admitted with or without charge, for seven or more days in any 12 month period.
Section 2(3) requires local authorities to make any notice of intention available for public inspection free of charge at reasonable hours, until the related application is processed.
Local authorities are required to take account of representations made in respect of any application by people and organisations set out in section 3 of the Act. There is no duty to consult these people or organisations, but a local authority must act reasonably, and what is reasonable may vary with the circumstances.
