Your Council Tax Explained

Page updated on: 19/10/2024

Every year we spend around £742 million providing services to residents and businesses in Carmarthenshire relating to local services such as Education, Social Services, Refuse Collection and so on. Council Tax is the current form of local taxation for domestic properties which local authorities use to raise money to pay for around 16.50% of this budget – around £123 million. The remaining £620 million is funded by Government grants and council income.

Each property in Carmarthenshire pays Council Tax, the amount depends on what your property is worth.

You can find the council tax valuation band for your property by visiting the www.gov.uk website.

Your Council Tax is made up of three parts, we collect on behalf of Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner and your local town or community council, who set their own budgets and levels of Council Tax. Your bill will show how much of the charge is due to the three parties. Details for Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner can be viewed here https://www.dyfedpowys-pcc.org.uk/en/the-office/finance/precept-and-medium-term-financial-plan/

You can find the council tax valuation band for your property by visiting the www.gov.uk website. Please note, however, that the valuation band can be reassessed by the Valuation Office in certain circumstances e.g. if it is decided that the last assessment was incorrect or if there has been a material increase in the value of a property and the property is then sold or leased for 7 years, or more. To understand why your property is in a certain band, please go to the How Domestic Properties are Assessed for Council Tax Bands page on Gov.uk website.

The current annual charge for a property will depend on the valuation band which has been assessed and the community in which the property is situated. The full Council Tax bill assumes that there are two adults living at your property. However you may be eligible for a discount or exemption.
