Library Services – Work Experience Placement
Interested in customer service, community engagement, or library operations?
This placement provides hands-on experience across a variety of roles within a library setting.

County Hall will be closed to all office staff on 28 November and 5 December, for fire alarm testing and essential electrical infrastructure works scheduled to be undertaken.

Greet and assist customers, answer enquiries, help with self-service machines, and direct visitors to the right sections. Gain communication, problem-solving, and public-facing skills.
Support checking books in and out, shelving returns, and maintaining organised stock. Learn to use library management systems, develop attention to detail, and improve organisational skills.
Assist with story times, craft clubs, reading challenges, and community events. Build teamwork skills and gain experience working with different age groups.
Help customers with computers, printing, scanning, or online resources. Develop digital literacy and confidence in supporting others with technology.
Support shelving, book displays, checking reservations, and stock rotation between branches. Gain organisational and time management skills, and insight into resource management.
Shadow staff processing invoices, bookings, and inter-library loans, and help prepare displays or marketing materials. Learn about the administrative and business side of library services.
This placement is ideal for anyone interested in library services, customer engagement, or community work, providing practical experience and exposure to a wide range of roles.
