Day Opportunities for Older People

There are many services in the community available to help older residents to get out and about such as lunch clubs or other social gatherings.  These can be found on Dewis or Connecting Carmarthenshire.

If you are still finding it difficult to manage, you may be assessed for the chance to attend one of our Day Opportunity services.

Day Services for Older Adults within Carmarthenshire are provided at Cartref Cynnes in Carmarthen and Cwmamman in Garnant. These bright and airy purpose built, single level, communal spaces enable individuals to be supported and cared for in a safe environment, by suitably experienced and qualified staff teams.

The Day Service provides a social connection for those who may otherwise feel socially isolated and additionally offers respite to Carers. Our aim is to encourage individuals to be as independent as they are able to support them in living independently in the community. There is a varied activity programme that is tailored to meet the individual needs of those that attend.

Both settings are open to individuals Monday through to Thursday from 8.30 a.m. - 5p.m.  Local authority Transport specialised in transporting people with additional physical needs is available in most areas if required.  Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and drinks are provided and special diets catered for, these are charged collectively per day.

Day Opportunities accessed through Carmarthenshire County Council are only available to those with an assessed need.

To determine if you have an assessed need you will need to have a Social Care assessment to determine your care and support needs.

It involves a detailed conversation between you/your carer and a social care professional to understand:

your circumstances,

personal outcomes,

barriers to achieving those outcomes,

any risks to yourselves or others, your strengths and capabilities and determining which service is the most appropriate.

After the assessment it shows that you have an assessed need, we will work with you to agree how often you need support.

If you feel you need care and support through a day opportunity, the first step is to ask us to assess your needs. Everyone is entitled to have their needs assessed and a service can be provided if you meet the agreed criteria.  For more information please visit here: How to get help

There is no one simple answer.  The cost you will have to pay will depend on your assessed care need and what service is needed and it will be determined by a financial assessment.

This will depend on your capital, income and allowances/disregards. If you have above the maximum capital threshold of £24,000 (2024/25) or you may not want to disclose your assets you will be assessed to pay the full cost of your care, up to the maximum charge.

Nobody will pay more than the charge for the services they are assessed to receive, and the charge will not be more than the maximum weekly charge of £100 per week.  (2024/25)
