Future Generations Menu

The Future Generations Menu pilot campaign is an initiative focused on redesigning primary school lunch menus, with emphasis on local produce to promote health, wellbeing, sustainability, social value, and education. We are aligning public sector catering with national and local policies to create long-term positive impact in three key areas:

  • Environmental sustainability
  • Rural economic growth
  • Net-zero targets.

We have commissioned the local non-profit organisation, Cegin Y Bobl, to work with three primary schools, Ysgol Teilo Sant, Llandeilo Primary School, and Ysgol Pen Rhos, to co-create these new menus. This approach encourages the participation of the entire school community through a series of workshops that bring together:

  • Catering Staff
  • Teachers
  • Parents
  • Children
  • Chefs
  • Educators from Cegin Y Bobl

Together, they will design meals that reflect the core values of sustainability, nutrition, and community.

The piloted schools are also reducing food waste by implementing food waste monitoring systems. These systems will track both avoidable plate waste and unavoidable kitchen waste, providing insights into daily food waste levels in schools, which will help guide future sustainability efforts.

The initiative also encourages pupil involvement, allowing them to actively participate in monitoring food waste.

Bremenda Isaf Farm, located in Llanarthne, will supply fresh, seasonal produce for this pilot throughout the academic year. This 100-acre farm is being used as a trial location to grow high-quality, affordable fruit and vegetables for the public plate.

The initiative not only supports local agriculture but also reduces the environmental impact of food production and transportation, while teaching children the value of eating fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The planting of fresh produce is calculated to match the amounts needed by the schools, minimising supply chain waste. Specific quantities are delivered to schools weekly, within a day of being harvested.

The redesigned menus will be introduced to the three participating schools in September 2025, with plans for a county-wide rollout in September 2026.

A recipe file will also be made available as an open-source resource for other local authorities in Wales, helping other schools to:

  • Integrate sustainable food practices
  • Support local economies
  • Achieve positive environmental and social outcomes

Through this initiative, we’re not only creating a more sustainable future for school catering but also encouraging children across the county to make healthier, more sustainable food choices. By involving them in the process and teaching them the importance of local sourcing and nutrition, we’re helping them develop lifelong habits that will benefit both their well-being and the planet.
