The Boathouse

It is situated right on the coastline overlooking the River Tâf as it winds it way to Carmarthen Bay. A small, cottage style building, the Boathouse offers a small number of rooms over three floors to explore. Some rooms are furnished to look as if Dylan Thomas has only just left them, while others exhibit Dylan Thomas’s story and various memorabilia from his life and times.

The writing shed

A short way along the narrow coastal path that leads to the Boathouse sits Thomas’s Writing Shed. This is furnished to resemble how Thomas left it after he passed away. Whilst not ordinarily open to visitors, the Shed offers a small, yet atmospheric space with lovely views across the Bay that recreates the creative environment that so inspired Wales’ greatest poet.

Former home of Dylan Thomas

The Boathouse was once lived in by Dylan Thomas and his family and it was where the great bard completed famous works such as Under Milk Wood.

Parking: There is no parking near the Boathouse due to the narrowness of the lane on which it is situated. The nearest car park is a 10-minute walk away and can get flooded at high tides.

Catering: There are some picnic tables at the back of the Boathouse, but there is only room for a small group of people. There is also a tearoom located at the property.

Filming restrictions: Filming could potentially be undertaken on any days of the week if given enough notice. Filming need not be restricted to days when the property is open or closed.

However, if filming were required on days when the property would usually be open to the public, the Boathouse would need to close for the convenience of the film crew. The property would therefore need to be compensated for any potential loss of earnings and additional staff time required to monitor/safeguard collections or be points of contact for the filming team.

Mitigations may need to be put in place to safeguard collection objects. Some collection objects, such as paintings, may be light sensitive and need to be taken off display or covered. Other objects may need to be moved to avoid damage/dust.

Food and drink would normally be limited within the property to avoid harm to collections.

Access to the house and tearoom are down 40 steps to the house and 10 steps to the patio area (which might prove challenging to those with mobility issues). There is no wheelchair access or accessible toilet.

Drone restrictions: Uncertain

The Boathouse and Writing Shed are both Grade II listed.
