Catchment Areas

The outcome of Carmarthenshire Catchment Area Review consultation is reflected in revised maps for academic year 2027/28.

Transitional Arrangements:

  1. Pupils who are on roll at a school before the implementation date of 1st September 2027 may remain at that school. Pupils will not be required to change schools as a result of any change to their catchment area.
  2. The admissions policy gives priority to siblings when a year group is oversubscribed. If a year group has fewer applicants than places, the catchment area is not considered. See Section 13 for the oversubscription criteria.
  3. Pupils who are not allocated a place at their preferred school have the right to appeal the decision before an independent admissions appeals panel. All appeals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and the independent panel has the authority to award places where appropriate.
  4. No transitional arrangements apply to families who move into the former catchment area after the implementation date, even if the pupil or any sibling already attends the school.

The Authority recognises that there is an important relationship between a school and its community.

The Authority has therefore identified a designated geographical area which the school serves and is referred to as the school’s catchment area.

Details of a school’s catchment area are available at the school, the County Council’s website or can be obtained from the relevant Admissions Authority.

Catchment areas may be subject to change; however, where changes are proposed, these would be subject to a public consultation before implementation.

Living in a school’s catchment area does not guarantee admission to the school. However it is an important factor as it will give the application a higher priority than applications from pupils who live outside the catchment area.

Residency within the defined catchment area of a school is also important as it is one of the key criteria in assessing eligibility for assistance with home-to-school transport.

Prior to making an application for admission to a school, the Authority strongly recommends that you contact, discuss, and if possible, visit your local school so that you are aware of the facilities and opportunities they can offer.
