Advice to parents of young people

I think my child is vaping – what can I do
There has been a surge in young people vaping when they have never even smoked a cigarette. Evidence shows that this may be linked to peer pressure and the urge to experiment.
According to data published recently by Public Health Wales and The School Health Research Network, ‘almost one-in-six year 11 students in Wales (15.9 per cent) are regularly using vapes and over 45 per cent of students in year 11 say they have tried a vape’.
Some see vapes as a ‘safe’ alternative to cigarettes. Whilst this is true to an extent, they still contain nicotine which is damaging to growing children. Public Health Wales has produced some information and guidance specifically for parents/carers if they suspect their child may be vaping and can be found at phw.nhs.wales/topics/vaping/young-people-and-vaping-information-for-parents-and-carers/ . This guide is designed to help parents and carers gain a clear, evidence-based understanding of vaping among children and teenagers in Wales. It includes the latest information on the health effects of vaping, statistics on how many young people are vaping, tips on how to identify potential signs of vaping, and advice on how to discuss the topic effectively.
Schools may have their own internal policies on the matter
Information and Guidance on Vaping for Secondary-Aged Learners in Wales, is aimed at teachers and those working with secondary-aged students. This guide, produced by Public Health Wales, offers data-driven insights into vaping and provides schools with the tools to address the issue through policies, practices, and curriculum integration.
