Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) 2019

The Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) is the Welsh Government’s official measure of relative deprivation for small areas in Wales. It identifies areas with the highest concentrations of several different types of deprivation. WIMD ranks all small areas in Wales from 1 (most deprived) to 1,909 (least deprived, these areas have an average population of 1,600 people in order to make fairer comparisons between areas located in different parts of Wales. It is a National Statistic produced by statisticians at the Welsh Government, their guidance document contains useful information on how to use WIMD.

WIMD is a measure of multiple deprivation that is both an area-based measure and a measure of relative deprivation and is currently made up of eight separate domains (or types) of deprivation and each domain is compiled from a range of different indicators, information about these indicators can be found in Welsh Governments WIMD 2019 Technical Report  and a list of the outputs which were  used is available on the Welsh Government website.
