Types of Fostering

Page updated on: 14/01/2025

There are different types of foster care, but they all share this in common… they provide a home, a safe space where children can grow.

At Foster Wales Carmarthenshire, we offer a variety of foster care arrangements tailored to meet the needs of both the children in our care and our foster carers:

  • Short-term fostering: This can range from an hour to a year and provides temporary care while long-term plans are being made.
  • Long-term fostering: Offers children who can’t live with their birth families a permanent, stable home environment.

These types of fostering cover all kinds of specialised foster care, such as:

  • Short breaks: Regularly planned breaks that give children time away from their families, providing respite for both the child and their primary carers.
  • Parent and child fostering: Supports parents in developing the skills they need to care for their children independently, with the guidance of experienced foster carers.
  • Therapeutic fostering: For children with more complex emotional or behavioural needs, offering additional support for both the child and the foster family.
  • Young refugees: Provide support, stability and guidance for a young refugee to develop the life skills they need.
