Previous flooding issues
The Brynglas trash screen is located on an unnamed watercourse off Brynglas Road, in the east of Drefach, in the Gorslas ward. The area is prone to surface water ponding and flooding issues. On-going monitoring and inspections indicated that the screen was sub-standard and blocked frequently.
These blockages exacerbated the flooding issues in the area and downstream, and were directly contributing to the internal flooding of 6 properties on Nant Y Dderwen. This, alongside issues relating to access and maintenance, made it apparent that the screen needed to be upgraded and re-designed.
The Flood Alleviation Scheme
The scheme can be divided into 3 components:
- Design and construction of a replacement, multi-layer trash screen and surrounding solid, concrete footpath.
- Design and construction of a secondary screen on the adjoining small watercourse/ditch.
- Construction of a formalised, permeable maintenance and access track and vehicle working area.
The work was completed in June 2023.
Benefit
This new scheme now provides a higher level of flood protection for 18 properties; improves the health and safety of the site for maintenance and inspection purposes; and improves the health, safety, and well-being of those residents at risk of flooding.
Funding
The improvement works cost a total of approximately £170,000.
Funding was provided by the Welsh Government and Carmarthenshire County Council.
