Flood Defence Projects to come

Kidwelly
In recent decades Kidwelly has regularly experienced flooding.
In October 2021 there were 2 large flood events which led to approximately 10 properties being internally flooded each time. At the north end of Kidwelly, it was the steep ordinary watercourse that runs north to south above Cae Ffynnon that bursts its banks with devastating impacts for residents downstream.
These flooding events are currently under investigation as part of a Section 19 report, and the issues with the culvert (and related infrastructure) along Ferry Road have been identified as a major cause of the flooding incident.
Modelling work (carried out as part of the S19 investigation) has confirmed the vulnerability of the culvert system in Ferry Road and has demonstrated that to protect downstream properties these culverts and associated infrastructure need to be upgraded. At the same time the section of the flow route that is open channel requires to be culverted and upgraded.
In 2023 the engineering consultancy Amey was commissioned to design the upgrade and this year the construction contract was awarded to the local company G D Harries & Sons.
The area affected by the development (red) and the location of the associated works compound (orange) are shown on the plan below, along with images of a flooded garden in Kidwelly 2015 followed by debris removed after the flooding event on the 4th October 2021 at Ferry Road.
