Food safety training
Page updated on: 08/02/2024
Food handlers must receive supervision and be instructed and/or trained in food hygiene to allow them to handle food safely.
Those responsible for developing and maintaining the food safety management system must also have received adequate training.
The requirements for training should be seen in the context of the nature and size of the business. There is no legal requirement to take part in a formal training course or get a qualification, although many businesses may want their staff to do so. The necessary skills may also be gained in other ways, for example through on-the-job training, self-study or relevant prior experience.
You (the operator of the food business) are responsible for ensuring this happens.
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health can provide details of training centres that run food hygiene courses in your area. They can also give details of trainers who run courses in languages other than English. They also offer a number of e-learning courses helping you to find the best training for you and your staff.
