Improving your broadband

Page updated on: 12/04/2024

There are a couple of simple steps you can take to find out how to get better broadband.

Step 1 – Run a broadband speed test

Running a speed test will let you know you your current broadband speed as well as your download and upload speed. Once you have this information, you can compare this to what speed you could be getting in your area and which providers are offering it.

Before running a speed test, make sure that there are no other devices using the internet, such as TV streaming, gaming or downloading. This will make sure that the test gives you a more accurate reading of your current speed.

For best results, use a laptop or a computer that is directly connected to the router via an ethernet cable.

Make a note of your speeds once the test has completed, so that you can easily compare at the next step.

Step 2 – Find out if you can get faster broadband speeds

Use the broadband availability checker provided by Ofcom who regulate the industry.

You will need to enter your postcode, then you will be asked to choose your address. Once this information is given, you will then be shown what type of broadband services are available in your area. Underneath this information you will see the network providers who are currently active in your area.

Step 3 - Next steps if you can't access better broadband yet

We know this isn't ideal and can be very frustrating. However, our teams are working closely with suppliers to understand their plans for commercial rollout and facilitating this across key departments in the Local Authority such as highways, planning etc.

They also meet regularly with Welsh and UK Government to support delivery of funded schemes such as Project Gigabit. Many communities and businesses have benefitted from the following:

  • Access Broadband Cymru - This Welsh Government scheme provides grants to fund or part-fund the equipment and installation costs of new broadband connections for homes and businesses in Wales.
  • Gigabit Voucher Schemes - This scheme is currently closed for new applications. We will update this page as soon as applications re-open. If you'd like to know more about how you can take advantage of this opportunity when it becomes available, further details are on the UK Government website. Your local Broadband Engagement Officer can explain how this works.

If you'd like to know more about any of this please email Aled Nicholas, your local Broadband Engagement Officer on broadband@carmarthenshire.gov.uk. Aled can talk through your options and discuss alternative solutions whilst you wait for your area to be upgraded.
