Carmarthenshire Archives is proud to have taken part in the recent ‘Antur yn yr Archifdy’ project supported by Archives and Records Council, Wales!
We have recently completed an exciting grant funded project that allowed us to engage with the staff and children at Myrddin Special Needs Unit (MSNU), Carmarthen. The aim of the initiative was to enable the pupils to learn more about the history of Carmarthen whilst having great fun at the archives!
‘Antur yn yr Archifdy’ was developed and delivered by Seren Stacey and Teena Gould, two local artists, with the assistance of the archives’ staff. To accommodate a range of learning styles, the artists introduced a variety of art processes to the children to discover their preferences and interests. For example, a menu of approaches was offered including camera-less photography, collage, clay, paint colour mixing, and print. Once the preferred processes were chosen, the learners were supported to build on these new skills and experiment with media. These new skillsets were then put to good use to fashion a final creative piece in glazed ceramics.
To celebrate the successful completion of the project, a special launch event was held at the archives where the children’s artwork was officially unveiled by Ceri Lilley, head teacher at Myrddin Special Needs Unit. These wonderful pieces of art are now on permanent display in the Archives Search Room and should give the children, their parents, and everyone involved in the project, a real sense of pride and accomplishment.
The project was supported by a grant of £2,717.82 received from the Archives and Records Council, Wales (ARCW) and Welsh Government.
