Ammanford Schools

Notice is hereby given in accordance with Section 43 and 42 of the School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 (the Act) and the School Organisation Code that Carmarthenshire County Council (the Council) having consulted such persons as required, propose to reconfigure nursery provision in Ammanford by:
- Discontinuing Ammanford Nursery School, High Street, Ammanford, SA18 2NS
Whilst also, - Extending the age range at Ysgol Bro Banw, Walter Road, Ammanford, SA18 2NF & High Street, Ammanford, SA18 2NS, from 4-11 to 3-11 and provide 43 nursery places; and
- Extending the age range at Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman, Lôn yr Ysgol, Ammanford, SA18 2NS from 4-11 to 3-11 and provide 43 nursery places.
The schools are maintained by Carmarthenshire County Council.
The Council undertook a period of consultation before deciding to publish this proposal. A consultation report containing a summary of the issues raised by consultees, the proposer’s responses and the views of Estyn is available on the Ammanford Consultation page on Carmarthenshire County Council's website.
- It is proposed to implement the proposal to discontinue Ammanford Nursery on 31 August 2026
- It is proposed to implement the proposal to extend the age range of Ysgol Bro Banw and Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman on 1 September 2026
Pupils from Ammanford Nursery will be able to transfer to Ysgol Bro Banw and Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman or another school on 1 September 2026
Ysgol Bro Banw is a language category 3.1 (3 = Welsh Medium 1= English Medium)
Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman is a language category 3 (Welsh Medium)
It will not be necessary to take any other measures to increase the number of school places at Ysgol Bro Banw.
Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman will utilise the former Ammanford Nursery building to ensure adequate capacity.
The Council has a School Transport policy and provides free transport to eligible pupils of statutory school age. This provision will not be affected by this proposal.
The admission number (AN) for pupils aged 4/5 in Ysgol Bro Banw the first school year in which the proposal has been implemented will be 54. The capacity of the school for pupils aged 3-11 once the proposal is implemented will be 426.There will be 43 nursery places in the school.
The admission number (AN) for pupils aged 4/5 in Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman the first school year in which the proposal has been implemented will be 43. The capacity of the school for pupils aged 3-11 once the proposal is implemented will be 348.There will be 43 nursery places in the school.
There will be no change to the catchment area of the schools.
Objection Period
Within a period of 28 days after the date of publication of this proposal, that is to say by 10 March 2026, any person may object to this proposal. Objections should be submitted through:

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This Explanatory Note does not form part of the Notice but is offered by way of clarification)
- It is the Authority’s intention to reconfigure nursery provision in Ammanford by:
- Discontinuing Ammanford Nursery School
Whilst also, - Extending the age range at Ysgol Bro Banw from 4-11 to 3-11
- Extending the age range at Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman from 4-11 to 3-11
to accommodate pupils from Ammanford nursery school.
2. Admission to the nursery does not automatically entitle a child to a full-time place in the school and a new application must be made.
3. Nursery pupils are entitled to part-time education from the beginning of the term following their third birthday. Part-time is defined as 5 morning or afternoon sessions per week. Nursery pupils will be entitled to attend on a full-time basis at the start of the term following their 4th birthday.
4. The proposed change will take place on 31 August 2026 and 1 September 2026.
