Actif Places
Project Applicant: Carmarthenshire County Council
Project title: Actif Places
Investment Priority: Community & Place
Location: Carmarthenshire
The Actif Places project strives to enhance the health and wellbeing of residents in economically disadvantaged communities within Carmarthenshire by harnessing the power of sports and physical activity. Many of these communities are underserved by sports and fitness facilities and we want to change that.
The consequences of physical inactivity are profound, impacting both physical and mental health. It’s closely linked to a higher risk of conditions such as high blood pressure, certain cancers, joint disorders, high cholesterol, and coronary heart disease. Moreover, adults residing in economically deprived regions are twice as likely to report mental health disorders compared to those in more affluent areas.
To address these challenges, the project plans to establish 12 community hubs dedicated to health, sports, and physical activity in areas currently lacking such opportunities. Additionally, it plans to deliver a targeted initiative in Llanelli to help combat health inequalities and foster community cohesion.
