Advantages of being bilingual

In Carmarthenshire the aim is for every child to have the opportunity to leave school and be fluent in Welsh and English. More and more employers across the county and in Wales as a whole are keen to recruit staff able to work comfortably in both languages.
Bilingualism strengthens cognitive abilities - bilingual people tend to be more creative and flexible. They can be more open-minded, and they also find it easier to focus on a variety of tasks simultaneously.
Research shows that learning and using two languages can bring many advantages, including:
- Strong communication and literacy skills in both Welsh and English
- Increased confidence and cognitive flexibility
- Enhanced problem-solving and creative-thinking skills
- Access to a wider range of educational, cultural and social opportunities
- Greater career opportunities in Wales and beyond
Importantly, learning through Welsh does not affect a child's ability to learn English. Pupils in Welsh-medium schools become fluent English speakers while gaining the additional advantage of speaking Welsh.
Opening Doors for the Future
Welsh language skills are increasingly valued by employers across a range of sectors, including education, healthcare, local government, business and the creative industries. By choosing Welsh-medium education, you are giving your child an additional skill that can benefit them throughout their life and career.
A Language for Life
Welsh-medium education is about more than learning a language. It gives children the opportunity to become part of Wales's rich cultural heritage while preparing them for a multilingual world.
By choosing Welsh-medium education, you are giving your child the opportunity to live, learn and thrive in both Welsh and English, opening doors today and for the future.
And being able to speak two languages helps in other ways too...
