Keeping your home safe
Page updated on: 18/12/2023
There are lots of things you can do to help keep your home safe during the winter months.
Avoid frozen pipes:
- Locate the stop tap – Ensure you can quickly turn off the water to your home if a pipe bursts or a leak occurs. It is usually under the sink, but if you are unable to find it please contact your housing officer.
- Heat your home – as a Council tenant, you must ensure you adequately heat your home throughout the winter months. This does not need to be at high levels but will help to avoid burst pipes and mould/damp.
If you are going away:
- Please tell your housing officer and provide an alternative contact.
Keep your heating on a low level to avoid burst pipes. Or, if you let us know we can drain down your - system.
- Turn off the stop tap to your home before you go away.
Important – we do not cover contents if your home is damaged by burst pipes. Please ensure that you have adequate contents insurance.
