Welsh Language Promotion Strategy
The Welsh Language Promotion Strategy, Carmarthenshire 2023–28 sets out the steps needed to strengthen the position of the Welsh language in the county by increasing the number of people who can speak Welsh, increasing opportunities to use Welsh daily, raising the status of the language, supporting Welsh-speaking communities and contributing to the Welsh Government’s aim of reaching one million Welsh speakers by 2050. The Strategy is one of the requirements of the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 and builds on partnership working and evidence developed over a number of years, including analysis of the results of Census 2021 and their implications for the future of the Welsh language in Carmarthenshire.
The Strategy was prepared by members of Carmarthenshire’s County Strategic Welsh Language Forum, which includes representatives from a wide range of organisations and partners. The Strategy is supported by an Action Plan that is reviewed and updated regularly by the Forum in order to respond to new challenges and opportunities.
The Welsh Language in Carmarthenshire – Census 2021

The report explores trends in the number of Welsh speakers, Welsh-language skills and changes in patterns of use across the county. The findings provide an important evidence base to inform language planning, policy development and the delivery of the priorities of Carmarthenshire’s Welsh Language Promotion Strategy.
